Grants are a type of student aid that is awarded by the government. Grants for college students do not have to be repaid.

Grants are based upon financial need, as calculated by the federal aid program. The first step in applying for government grants is by completing the FAFSA.

Of course every student and parent would rather receive grants instead of loans, since they do not have to be repaid. So the student hopes to see a grant award when the results are returned from the application.

There are a few things to be aware of, however, when expecting a grant. The funds available for grants are limited, therefore the grant will not usually fully fund educational expenses. If the student is planning on attending a community college where tuition rates are lower, it is possible that grants will cover a greater percentage of the tuition and fees.

The second thing to be aware of is that when the need analysis is done by the government or school, the expected contribution of the parent is usually higher than in reality what is possible for most families. This expected contribution effects the amount available to the student for grants.

Another significant factor is that if the parent or guardian claims the student as a dependent on income tax returns, this effects the amount of aid available to the student. In general, a student who is ‘independent’ of the parents as far as the tax law goes, will receive more in financial aid awards.

First year students may find that they receive less grant awards than they do in subsequent college years.

Finding information on free grants for college is a subject sure to be of interest to students just out of high school as well as later in life returning to school people. Grants for college are not necessarily hard to come by, but do require a bit or research and organizational work. Free grants for college are a must explore possibility for all college students.

Unlike ’student loans’, grants do not have to be repaid, and unlike ’scholarships’ they are not necessarily merit based.

The first thing you want to research is what types of grants are available for going to college. The most common grant for college that we hear about is called the “Pell Grant.” This grant is an income based federal grant for low-income families. However there are also grants that are not income based. There are free grants for college that are based on subject of study, merit, geographic location, minority status and more.

The first stop you should make when searching for free grants for college is your local community college’s Financial Aid office. Meet with a financial aid counselor and discuss some options that they know of which might be available to you. It’s their job to be aware of grants, student loan programs, and scholarships that could help you in your quest in furthering your education.

You should be forewarned however, that even though it is their job, they are often trained to do their job like systematic robots and they have a ‘first question’ rule. If you answer the first question the wrong way, their brains shut down and they will go no further with you.

An example of this would be that you may have a current student loan in default. If you are in default on a student loan, you cannot get another one until you make good on the first. However, there are exceptions to this rule, and if you know them you can take action to implement them and proceed with your career.

The problem with these financial aid counselors is that they are ‘entry level’ employees who are discouraged to think for themselves. They have a system and it’s all they know. If you tell them that you have arranged a workout and that you now will qualify for a new student loan, they will not even attempt to ‘look into it.’ They will simply repeat that until you satisfy the first loan, you will be unable to get another one. Occasionally, however, you will find someone who is a seasoned veteran of the financial aid world and who will go out of their way to help you, so this is still a must do.

The best way to avoid this is to do your own research on free grants for college via your local library and of course, the world wide web. Be prepared to make your applications early and wait. Free grants for college are available to you, you just need some ’self startership’ to find them and get them.

The first thing you need to know is where to look. Just doing a Google search for it and it will often lead you to a fruitless search, unfortunately. However, there are some websites that you can use that will bring up much better results:

Foundation Center:

The Foundation Center website lists thousands of available grants, including government grants for women, grants for individuals, grants for small businesses, and many more. The nice thing about their website is it also includes private foundation grants and corporate giving programs in addition to government grants for women. Often it is easier to get private grants for women than federal grants, because there is much more competition for federal/government grants than private foundation grants. If you go to foundationcenter.org you can search their database for free, but to get more detailed information it does cost a bit of money. My course (see the link at the bottom of this article) shows you some ways to access even the detailed information without having to pay high subscription fees. Check out the link at the bottom of this article for this information.

Grants.gov:

Grants.gov is the central place to search for government grants for women. They do not list any private foundation grants, but government grants only. The website is quite self explanatory, but can be a bit confusing even though they’re constantly trying to improve it. If you are going to try to get a government grant through grants.gov, I would recommend you get some guidance. My website (listed at the bottom of this article) has a lot of resources to guide you in a situation like this.

Government Grants For Women Entrepreneurs:

If you are a woman who owns 51% or more of your business, your business would be classified as a “woman-owned business” and may be eligible for additional grant resources. Before you seek these resources, however, you will need to do the following: make sure your credit report is clean, put together a well thought out business plan, and get a third party to certify that you ar ea woman-owned business. The small business administration can do this for you (certification).

Have you belonged to the group of women in the United States that unfortunately missed out on their college education? Maybe, for reasons out of your control upon finishing high school, college wasn’t something you or your family could afford. Well, the latest Obama scholarships are about to change all that.

The truth is that the years are and have crept by you as you’ve been busy with your kids, your job, and making ends meet. It’s hardly surprising that there’s been little or no funds left for your dream of attaining a college education. There are many people in this country who have not had the good fortune of receiving a post-secondary education funded by their parents. If you haven’t been to college because of a shortage of cash, I have some wonderful news.

Have you heard of the various privately funded scholarships which are available because of the United States Government and President Obama? This means that a woman over the age of 18 living in the United States can apply for up to $10,000 in financial aid to help pay their college expenses. This is not an offer that is likely to be repeated ever again as the government doesn’t give money like this away very often so you should jump in there while it’s available. This entire thing could be over and done with before you know it so be sure to apply today – there is no charge to you, and it will only take a couple minutes of your time.
