The first thing you need to know is where to look. Just doing a Google search for it and it will often lead you to a fruitless search, unfortunately. However, there are some websites that you can use that will bring up much better results:

Foundation Center:

The Foundation Center website lists thousands of available grants, including government grants for women, grants for individuals, grants for small businesses, and many more. The nice thing about their website is it also includes private foundation grants and corporate giving programs in addition to government grants for women. Often it is easier to get private grants for women than federal grants, because there is much more competition for federal/government grants than private foundation grants. If you go to foundationcenter.org you can search their database for free, but to get more detailed information it does cost a bit of money. My course (see the link at the bottom of this article) shows you some ways to access even the detailed information without having to pay high subscription fees. Check out the link at the bottom of this article for this information.

Grants.gov:

Grants.gov is the central place to search for government grants for women. They do not list any private foundation grants, but government grants only. The website is quite self explanatory, but can be a bit confusing even though they’re constantly trying to improve it. If you are going to try to get a government grant through grants.gov, I would recommend you get some guidance. My website (listed at the bottom of this article) has a lot of resources to guide you in a situation like this.

If you are a woman who owns 51% or more of your business, your business would be classified as a “woman-owned business” and may be eligible for additional grant resources. Before you seek these resources, however, you will need to do the following: make sure your credit report is clean, put together a well thought out business plan, and get a third party to certify that you ar ea woman-owned business. The small business administration can do this for you (certification).

Government Student Loans, scholarships and grants are available to anyone looking for higher education, whether it is a college diploma, university degree or any other accredited academic certificate. There are many ways of finding aid for your further education. Private student loans, federal government student loans and any other academic loans are different from student scholarship and grants as they have to be repaid. Student loan schemes are available in two different types of loans, subsidized and unsubsidized loans. Find out if you are eligible for subsidized loans by completing an application online. The interest for the subsidized loan is paid by the Federal Government in the United States and in some other countries the finance government department provides some sort of study assistance. The unsubsidized loans have a normal percentage of rates of interest.

Using online services can help you find all the necessary information for applying for federal government student loans online. Expenses not subsidized by the Federal Government such as education related expenses or overseas study can be applied for through a private student loan. Many of the student loan lenders private and government, have online application and processing facilities. The loans are reviewed and this process can usually take about a week or two. The repayments of Federal student loans usually begin six months after graduation. This is referred to as the grace period. Most student loans are deferred for repayment until students have completed their schooling or leave school.

Student loans are not only used for the tuition but also to pay for school related costs such as paying associations, housing costs and lab fees, stationery and text books. If you are 18 years of age you can apply for a student loan. Private loans for students are not given without a co signatory or a credit report. Credit unions give student loans if you have collateral to put up. During the credit period, you have the option of paying or not paying the interest on the loan. It will become easier if you do make periodical payments to cover the interest of the loan. If you have the opportunity to pay the interest off, the capital repayment once you have graduated becomes easier for you.

Yes, I’m sure this is probably correct, however most of the government grant programs have very specific qualifications for to apply. For example, there are a ton of grants specifically to go to historically Hispanic serving colleges, historically serving black colleges, state homeless shelters, only for Junior colleges, non profits serving battered women, tribal colleges, the thing is…. individuals can’t apply for all these 1,521 grants. I’m sure the same is true with the others as well.

When you are applying for a government issued scholarship, there are a few things you can do to greatly increase your chances of getting the grant. First and foremost, you should aim on starting your search for what grants you are going to apply for early. The reason for this is due to the fact that many

1. Apply Early, Apply Often

Start your research early using Scholarship Search. Give an allowable time for researching scholarships so that you have many options to choose from, request information and application materials and complete your application. Be sure to apply as early as you can because sometimes it takes months for the administration of the government to process the forms you give them. Their correspondence is also sent by mail, so you have to allow for 4 to 6 weeks time for delivery.

2. Application Tips
– Read the eligibility requirements carefully – Organize all scholarship materials by creating a separate file for each scholarship – Have your highschool transcript ready – Have your SIN number ready as well as two pieces of photo identification – Have your parent’s financial information and tax returns ready – Prewrite an essay – Get letters of recommendation written for you – If you are applying to an arts program have a portfolio ready – Always follow instructions

3. When Applying, Remember The Following

First, you will want to quickly double-check your application if you are using the same information to apply to multiple scholarship grants. Be sure you have not left any incorrect names or blank fields. Again, it can not be stressed enough that you need to apply early. In some cases applications that are recieved late are not processed at all or stored on file – they get shredded and go right in the garbage.

4. Taxes That Relate To Government Scholarship Grants

You need to report any grants that you get from the government when doing your taxes. Amounts you are receiving from a scholarship or fellowship are used for tuition and fees required for enrolment or attendance at the educational institution such as books, supplies and equipment required for courses of instruction. The amounts you received are not as payments for your services however if it is under the National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program or the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship and Financial Assistance Program, the amount is tax free without regard to any services you are oblige to perform. Gross income amounts used for incidental expenses such as room and board, travel and optional equipment are included as well as amounts received as payments for teaching, research and other services required as a recipient of a scholarship or fellowship grant. You may have to make estimated tax payments if in case any part of your scholarship or fellowship grant is taxable.

In his State of the Union Address for 2007, President George W. Bush called for a 22% increase in federal grants for research and development of alternative energy. However, in a speech he gave soon after, he said to those assembled, I recognize that there has been some interesting mixed signals when it comes to funding.

Where the mixed signals were coming from concerned the fact that at the same time the President was calling on more government backing for research and development, the NREL, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory of Golden, Colardo was laying off workers and contractors left and right.

Apparently, the Laboratory got the hint, because soon after the State of the Union Address, everyone was re-hired. The second speech of the President’s was actually given at the NREL. There is almost unanimous public support for the federal backing through research grants, tax breaks, and other financial incentives of research and development of alternative energy sources.

The NREL is the nation’s leading component of the National Bioenergy Center, a virtual center that has no central bricks and mortar office. The NREL’s raison d’etre is the advancing of the US Department of Energy’s and the United States’ alternative energy objectives.

The laboratory’s field researchers and staff scientists, in the words of Laboratory Director Dan Arvizu, support critical market objectives to accelerate research from scientific innovations to market-viable solutions. At the core of this strategic direction are NREL’s research and technology development areas.

These areas span from understanding renewable resources for energy, to the conversion of these resources to renewable electricity and fuels, and ultimately to the use of renewable electricity and fuels in homes, commercial buildings, and vehicles. The federally-backed Laboratory directly helps along the United States’ objectives for discovering renewable alternative fuels for powering our economy and our lifestyles.

The NREL is set up to have several areas of expertise in energy research and development. It spearheads research and development efforts into renewable sources of electricity; these would include such things as solar power, wind power, biomass power, and geothermal power.

It also spearheads research and development of renewable fuels for powering our vehicles such as biomass and biodiesel fuels and hydrogen fuel cells. Then, it seeks to develop plans for integrated system enginnering; this includes bringing alternative energy into play within buildings, electrical grids and delivery systems, and transportation infrastructures.

The Laboratory is also set up for strategic development and analysis of alternative energy objectives through the forces of economics, market analysis and planning, and alternative energy investment portfolios structurings.

The NREL is additionally equipped with a Technology Transfer Office. This Office supports laboratory scientists and engineers in the practical application of and ability to make a living from their expertise and the technologies they develop.

NREL’s research and development staff and its facilities are recognized for their remarkable prowess by private industry, which is reflected in the hundreds of collaborative projects and licensed technologies that the Laboratory now has with both public and private partners.

Nonetheless, you can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov – these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support a for-profit venture.

Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants — all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently. But still the info is the same – hardly any grants for starting a for profit business.

Even SBA does NOT give out grants. From the SBA website http://www.sba.gov/expanding/grants.html…

"The U.S. Small Business Administration does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs. (See http://www.sba.gov/financing for more information) While SBA does offer some grant programs, these are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments."

Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT – Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program

Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women’s Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women’s business center that will train women entrepreneurs

For private grants, you may want to check the Foundation Center’s Foundation Grants for Individuals Online. It’s a subscription based website ($9.95 per month) but their opening blurb only says that the database is ideal for "students, artists, academic researchers, libraries and financial aid offices." Entrepreneurs are apparently not one of them, so I take it they also don’t have listings of private foundations who give grants to would-be entrepreneurs.

Despite what many people tell you, the idea that the government is just sitting around with a pile of money waiting to give out to you or any other small business is just plain wrong. This is not to suggest however that no grants are available to anyone at any time.

The whole idea of a grant is to provide capital for some activity the government wants to encourage. Typically this means in less desirable areas or opportunities. So although there may be grants available for things such as encouraging the arts or research into a specific disease, unless you can fit your business into these niche areas, there is not a lot of grant money your dream.

This isn’t to say that assistance isn’t available at all, just that grants are probably a long process when and if you happen to find one where your small business fits. There are other ways however that you might explore to fund a small business.

Of these small business financing options, one of the most popular is the loan. That’s right, just go out and borrow the cash needed. If you’ve done your homework and have a solid business plan then the thought of self financing through your personal credit lines shouldn’t worry you. After all, you’re really betting on yourself that you will be successful.

There is a lot of confusion about the Small Business Administration. Yes, this is the government agency dedicated to helping small business…just not with grants. The SBA actually funds a very small portion of the total number of small business loans that are called SBA type loans. What the SBA actually does is “guarantee” to the bank that the money will be paid back, either by you or as a last resort by the SBA/government. If this sounds a lot like the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) you are correct.
Like the FHA, the loan needs to meet their lending or “insurance guarantee” standards. For a small business loan, it’s much the same. The SBA will look at your credit, ability to pay back the loan and the business plan.

Other potential sources of private loans can be found based on ethnic, religious, military service – veterans, or other sub groups of the population. Check out all resources until you find a group willing to finance your dream.

Finally, never give up. I personally know someone who wanted to start a home construction business and needed funding for his first home. The SBA was not an option, and being young, most banks just looked and politely declined. Long story short, he ended up going to 53 different lending institutions but he DID finally find a small, local savings and loan willing to take a chance on the new guy. Why? Because although he didn’t have all the necessary “security” they were impressed by the list of financial institutions he went to and was turned down but never gave up.
