Grants are a type of student aid that is awarded by the government. Grants for college students do not have to be repaid.

Grants are based upon financial need, as calculated by the federal aid program. The first step in applying for government grants is by completing the FAFSA.

Of course every student and parent would rather receive grants instead of loans, since they do not have to be repaid. So the student hopes to see a grant award when the results are returned from the application.

There are a few things to be aware of, however, when expecting a grant. The funds available for grants are limited, therefore the grant will not usually fully fund educational expenses. If the student is planning on attending a community college where tuition rates are lower, it is possible that grants will cover a greater percentage of the tuition and fees.

The second thing to be aware of is that when the need analysis is done by the government or school, the expected contribution of the parent is usually higher than in reality what is possible for most families. This expected contribution effects the amount available to the student for grants.

Another significant factor is that if the parent or guardian claims the student as a dependent on income tax returns, this effects the amount of aid available to the student. In general, a student who is ‘independent’ of the parents as far as the tax law goes, will receive more in financial aid awards.

First year students may find that they receive less grant awards than they do in subsequent college years.

If you’re wondering whether or not you have to go to college, the answer is no. College is not mandatory, it’s an individual choice. College is not for everyone, but it should be. While college is an experience that is expensive, lengthy and full of bureaucratic paperwork, it’s also one of the most useful experiences that you can have in life. College isn’t obligatory, but in this day and age, a college education should be viewed as essential.

If you feel like you can’t deal with college, then by all means don’t go. College is an investment that shouldn’t be made lightly, especially if you doubt your desire to succeed. You can find plenty of jobs out there that don’t require you to learn about science, history or philosophy. If you want to take the fast track to becoming a skilled professional, college might not be the quickest path to get there, but it is the most complete.

Employers in the 21st century want well-rounded individuals who bring more than just a single specialty to the table. In today’s working world, you have to be a sharp multi-tasker easily capable of switching gears. You have to have some sort of general understanding about how the world operates. You need computer and communication skills, and you need to prove that you can dedicate yourself to your job.

More and more it seems like an undergraduate degree is now the equivalent of what a high school diploma was fifty years ago. It’s the starting point for professional development. It’s the new prerequisite for entering the job world. If you think you can have a rewarding career without a college degree, you can. It’s becoming increasingly more difficult for that to happen though.

Not all college paths are the same. If you are not ready to hurl yourself into a four-year university, then start smaller. Attend your local community college, and rack up credits at a fraction of the cost. After filling out all the necessary grants and fee waivers, you can pretty much attend community college for free. If you want to test the academic waters before you jump in the college pool, then a community college is perfect for you.

What if you are a working professional who doesn’t have time to attend classes during the day? There are numerous online degree programs, and many colleges are now offering remote education options where you never have to attend a single classroom session. Take classes at night through your internet connection. Work on your homework during the weekend. No matter who you are, or what your time (and financial) restraints are, you can find a degree program that’ll suit your specific educational needs.

If you’re debating whether or not to attend college, you have to make a personal choice based on your own educational and career goals. Nobody is more qualified to make the decision than you are. College is an intensely individual experience, so in order to make the most of it, you need to choose a college and major that’s right for you (regardless of what’s wanted by your friends and family).

Not everyone requires a typical four-year university experience. If you’re unsure whether or not college is right for you, experiment a little bit first before you commit multiple years of your life. Once you’ve made a decision, stick to it and follow through. Getting the most from your college experience is entirely up to you.

do u have 2 pay the money back 4 a college grant when u are done with college? if so what do u call those other grants that give u the money for free? how do u appley 4 a collge grant? and are my chances of getting a grant higher because i live with my single mother 2 sisters in a low income apartment and i am foreigner in the u.s but i have my citizenship?

A federal grant simply means gift aid from the government that you do not have to pay back. If you are looking to apply for a federal grant…you need to start at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You will complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and that will determine what you may qualify for in loans and grants. In order to apply you must be one of the following : US Citizen or a eligible noncitizen with an Alien registration Number. (not here on a work visa)

If you are either a citizen nor an eligible noncitizen, you are not eligible for federal student aid. However, you may be eligible for state or college aid. You would have to speak with the college you plan to attend for that information.

Although you will enjoy the experience tremendously, going to college will cost you at least an arm and possibly a leg. If you accept the fact early on that you need extra funds to pay for this investment, then you’ll be motivated to start looking for financial assistance opportunities.

Here are the five best ways to pay for college.

1. Scholarships

Scholarships are a prospective college student’s primary aid objective. Apply for as many scholarships as you can, because if you just get one, you’ll end up saving thousands of dollars on your college costs. Scholarships don’t have to be paid back. You may have to fulfill certain requirements, but you aren’t going to make any repayments on your scholarship awards. Scholarships can be need or performance-based. There are scholarships out there that cater to every single imaginable identity, from football players to cancer survivors to Mormons. Put in the time to find scholarships that you are eligible for, and apply for as many as possible.

2. Grants

Grants are the next best thing to a scholarship. Grants do not need to be repaid. You can receive thousands of grant dollars from your university as well as local, state and federal governments. Make sure that you have filled out all the grant applications you qualify for. Get your FAFSA turned in early every year. The more free money you get, the less you have to pay back. So get on the ball and start looking for grants.

3. Loans

Loans are not as appealing as scholarships and grants, but they can come in very handy. If you get a student loan, you need to understand what you are getting yourself into. Subsidized loans are awarded based on financial need. They do not accrue interest while you are in school. Unsubsidized loans are not need based. When you take out an unsubsidized loan, you will accrue interest while you are in school. Be sure that you go to your loan exit review, so that you understand the terms of your repayment obligations once you graduate.

4. Work

Get a job. Pay as you go. Invest as you invest. If you have money coming in, you’ll be more secure during and after your college experience.

5. Family

You can always hit up your family members for money. Be honest with each other. Know what to expect and what’s expected. Have all the facts out on the table so that you can plan accordingly.

If you prepare for the financial impact of college, you’ll be in a better position once you graduate. Don’t assume anything. Get the answers to your financial questions ahead of time, and remember to apply for aid at least one year before you actually need it.

For some, entering college is hard enough but with all financial obligations you and your family have been going through, there is no doubt that entering college is much more difficult.

On the average, a median college and university charges $20,000 a year per student. That would not cover other personal expenses for the whole school year. For this reason, finishing or even entering college is far more difficult that you can imagine; not unless of course if your parents have been very good in making more money than you can ever spend. Nonetheless, for most students like you and most families like yours, college could be a dream.

Not anymore, with several thousands scholarships out there, you can easily go to college for less, even for free!

But you have to remember first that not all college scholarship grants are created equal. There are those that answers partial expenses. There are those that answer full. There are other college scholarships that provide the need of minorities, particular degree the student would like to take, particular race, etc.

The question right now is: How can you locate and pinpoint a particular college scholarship that is perfectly right for you?

The answer: By using college scholarship search.

College scholarship search is the best tool you can use if you want to search for a particular college scholarship that fits you and your need. College scholarship search is far better than using the conventional search engines like Google and Yahoo if you want to locate a scholarship grant.

With college scholarship search, you have the access on the online database that can contain as much as 50,000 college funding sources. You can also have an access to millions of individual awards that is equivalent to at least 3 billion dollars worth of scholarships.

To have an access on these sites, all you have to do is to enter your personal information including your name, age, birthday, address, e-mail address, citizenship, and race among others. Other college scholarship search would require you to give your academic information about yourself. This would include your past scholarship grants and awards received.

College scholarship search will give you the ultimate ease that would lead you to the best and most suited scholarship you can get. And the best thing about using this is that, you don’t have to search far and spend too much time on the web. The college scholarship search is all you need.

i have hope grant, Pell and i am trying to find more. does anyone know where to look? i tried the library but that book only has scholarships and loan information. i want grants that i can use to have more money for college and not have to pay back or worry about interest over a 6 year period
there are whats called third party grants. and i have need for them i just don’t know how to find them.

Grants are given out on a "need’ basis. The fafsa application is the only true grant application that I know of for folks who want to go to college. By filling out the fafsa you are applying not only for federal grants but also state grants. It sounds like you are looking for additional money, which would be scholarships, not grants.

Planning to go away or to start college is a fun and exciting time for those students who are planning on attending. The stressful part usually comes from finding the resources to pay for your college education. It is important that you and your parents plan out together how much money you are going to need for college and where the money will come from to cover your college expenses. You will need to sit down with a pad of paper and a pen in order to write everything out. The earlier you start planning, the better. This way if you or your parents need to make adjustments, you can do so before it is time for you to head off your freshmen year.

Figure out your costs:

1.Tuition & Books: Contact the colleges and/or universities that you are interested in attending. Ask specifically about the estimated costs for tuition and books. Usually the estimate of these costs is provided in the college brochure.

2. Housing: If you are planning on living on-campus, you will also need to obtain housing information. Housing information should include the cost and what the cost includes. Some colleges and universities offer meal plans to students who live on-campus, which provides you with a certain amount of money to eat at the campus restaurants, cafeteria and cafes. If you are planning on living off-campus, you will need to do a little research on the average cost of rent for the area. Also be sure to include extra costs such as electric, phone, water, etc.

3. Food: You have to eat, so be sure to include spending money for food in your calculations.

4. Spending money: College is more than just academics. There are student activities that you are going to want to participate in throughout the semester. Be sure to allocate a certain amount of money to spend on going out with friends, going to the movies, participating in a sorority or fraternity, etc.

5. Tally up your costs on an annual basis and then be sure to multiply the annual cost by how many years it is going to take you to complete your particular major. Usually, 4 years is the number you will need to multiply by, unless you already know that you will be going to on to graduate school, law school, medical school, etc. If that is the case, you will need to go through the same 5 steps for the costs involved with these types of schools (adding it to your undergraduate college costs).

Tapping Into Your Resources:

Once you have an idea of what the cost of your college education is going to be now it is time to list out all of the possible resources that you can tap into to pay for everything. You will need to sit down with your parents and go over all of these costs that you have tallied. Find out from them what source of funds they have and are willing to contribute. You may also have some resources of your own that you can contribute.

Here is a list of possible resources to consider:

1. Savings or Investment Accounts

2. Pre-paid College Tuition Program

3. Education IRA, ROTH IRA, or Retirement IRA

4. Savings Bonds

5. Contributions from Grandparents or other family members

6. Scholarships*

7. Grants*

8. Student Loans*

*You may not know the contribution amount of these resources yet.

After you have a list of your possible fund sources and the total amount that each resource can provide, total everything up. Where does this leave you? Do you have enough to cover your college education or are in the hole? If you are in the hole, then you should come up with a plan on how you and your parents can make up for the difference. Research scholarship and grant opportunities that you may be able to qualify for or pick-up a part-time job after school to help contribute to your college savings. Your guidance counselor at school and the Internet should be able to help you find scholarships and grants that you may be eligible for. Especially, if it is your senior year of high school, contact the financial aid department of the college you will be attending. Find out when they deadline is and what forms you have to complete to apply for financial aid.

There are resources available to you for paying for your college education. Just be organized and diligent about finding out what the costs are, what resources you have available to you, and whether or not you to find additional resources to cover your college expense.

Entering into a college means students will have to bear up a little more of their existing expenses. If they are ill-prepared for the costs, applying for a loan remains only the option they have. In this prospect, Cheap College Loans do a good business. With the fund raiser, you can cover the cost of education expenses such as tuition, accommodation, food, books, stationery, computer etc. The financial aid is something that most of the students look it for.

The college loans for students come in different forms as per the convenience. Students pay their education costs while attending classes. Scholarships can be one type of a finance aid award. However, students can find the cheap college loans in two type merit-based and need-based money provisions. Merit-based loan can include scholarships awarded by the learning institution. Scholarships are usually awarded for outstanding academic achievements, though a great number of potential students remain devoid of the finance benefits. On the other hand, need-based student loan is awarded on the basis of need of the student. There are several different programs such as grants, scholarships and other government grants which are offered in both subsidised and unsubsidised.

Precisely, cheap college loans are available from most of the large lending institutions. Usually, college loans obtained through the government grants have a rate of interest than private education loans. However, there are several other commercial institutions, building societies which offer these money provisions also. But availing college loans from a high street lender is considered good. Reason behind is that you can get the provisions on competitive rates. It is because of a great competition amongst lenders in the money market. In prospect of selling their finance products, lenders lower down the term and conditions of their offers in order to expand their lending businesses.

For all this, repayment is usually pretty straightforward when it comes to cheap college loans. Once you complete you college, your grace period begins. This is a period of six to nine months before which college loans must begin being repaid.

For all of this, a bevy of lenders is available online and offline, though processing online is preferred. With the process, you can save a good amount of your money and energy. Money is granted and you start investing the raised fund to avail quality education to make your future prosperous.
